Holly - can be traced back to ancient pagan traditions, when a sprig of holly was brought into the home to ward against evil spirits in the winter.
Amaryllis - a common holiday decorative flower that can be be forced into bloom for the holidays (though it naturally blooms in the Spring)!
Poinsettia - grew in popularity in the US through Mexico, where they are known as Flores de Noche Buena, or flowers of the holy night.
Pine - evergreen boughs were believed to keep evil spirits away during winter months, and today that tradition carries on with Christmas trees!
Mistletoe - believed to be a symbol of vitality due to its ability to flower through the winter, mistletoe was used to enhance fertility, lending new meaning to today’s tradition of a kiss under the mistletoe.
